HOOVER DAM

On our way to Las Vegas, Nev. from Tucson, Ariz. my friends and I drove across the Hoover Dam. As one of the only routes across the Colorado River, we had no idea we would get caught in a traffic jam for three hours.
We ran into a construction zone before reaching the dam because they are building a new bridge which will eventually replace the road which goes over the dam itself. There is a worry that someone might try to blow up the dam with a car bomb, so they are making a new bridge to get across and eliminate the risk.
In addition to the road construction we had to wait through, we also had to go through a checkpoint with police to make sure we didn't have explosives in our car. We were running low on gas and my friend's leg was going numb from pushing in the clutch for the standard transmission, but we thought it was actually pretty cool that we had a chance to drive across the famous dam before they close the road for good.
When we finally could see the dam, it wasn't like anything we had expected. We had seen the dam on TV, in pictures and in movies, but none of those seemed to show it justice to how it looked in person.
Driving through the jagged mountains down the winding road, we started to see the Colorado River and how huge the dam was. There were power lines running up and down the canyon held up with huge steel structures.
It was an amazing sight to see and I wish we could have had more time to stop and see more. Other than the traffic and the three-hour delay in our trip, it was well worth it.
