EDITORIAL: Places to avoid: cliffs, volcanoes, floodplains

Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University, IA

Land near rivers is subject to flooding.

Who knew?

Apparently not the city of Des Moines. Fifteen years after buying up destroyed sections of the Birdland Park neighborhoods following the Flood of 1993, they're doing it again.

After having bought inundated properties after the previous flood, the city proceeded to sell some of the properties to a developer, who in turn built new houses.

Just the facts: Taking another look at polar bears, oil greed and Americans

Gateway, University of Nebraska, Omaha, NE

1 day ago by Christina Clark

I recently wrote a column concerning rising gas prices in America ("Polar bears, oil: American greed needs to be restrained by people," June 17). Due to the amount of feedback, both good and bad, I am writing a follow up to provide factual content to back up my piece.

Obama attacks The New Yorker:

Gateway, University of Nebraska, Omaha, NE

1 day ago by Scott Stewart

If you turned on TV news early last week, it would have been difficult for you not to hear about the now-infamous cover of July 21 issue of The New Yorker magazine.

Odds are good, too, that you heard pundits denounce the cover as tasteless, offensive and possibly racist.

Insurers should cover birth control

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

1 day ago by DI Editorial Board

When a female reporter from the Los Angeles Times asked Sen. John McCain why many health-insurance plans cover Viagra but not contraceptives, even his many years of interview experience seemed unable to lead him to an answer. The presumptive Republican nominee could not recall how he voted on the subject - a mystery soon solved by his questioner: He voted against it.

TRIPLETT: Out of the cave, into the sun

Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska, NE

2 days ago by Grant Triplett

This week, I decided it was time to come out of my cave and get a tan. I used the word "cave" for two reasons: First, due to the hours of my job, I hardly see the 10-2 sun that is the best for catching skin-darkening rays. The second is that I have somewhat of a hairy chest - and by somewhat, I mean it is like that of a caveman.

Life's Whys

The Trailblazer Times, MidAmerica Nazarene University, KS

Why? From the earliest stages of childhood, this question seems to be top on the minds of most human beings. I remember all the "why" questions that stampeded through my head as a kid. Why is the sky blue and the grass green? Why does it get hot in the summer and cold in the winter? Why are my eyes brown?

As I get older, "why" is attached to much harder topics.

King's latest antics reflect immaturity, not Iowans

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

2 days ago by DI Editorial Board

Iowans, it must be said, enjoy much the same nationwide reputation as their neighbors to the north: nice people. How jarring, then, to witness one of our own behaving like a witless boor while disrupting, arguably, one of the most important congressional hearings in recent history.

Single language unfeasible for America

Daily Nebraskan, University of Nebraska, NE

2 days ago by Kyle Citta

I get bored easily. Worse, I find procrastination to be a vivifying centerpiece in my life. So when things need to get done, I end up practicing a kind of self-schadenfreude regarding my future.

Yes, my life is quite glamorous.

And wouldn't you know that my dastardly editor, Jeff Hall, wants me to write about local things.

Art Museum needs to move downtown

Daily Iowan, University of Iowa, IA

4 days ago by DI Editorial Board

With the UI Museum of Art having faced so much destruction in the flood, the best move it can make is to move.

Relocating the museum would ensure that it comes back even better than the wonderful place it has been. The new museum would be refined and revamped. It would stand as our triumph in the face of the flood. Hopefully, lengthy discussions and evaluations can be avoided - because the community, the Arts School, and the UI need the museum back.

PRELL: Obama is moving too far right

Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University, IA

5 days ago by Sophie Prell

When presidential election time rolls around, the buzz is near-constant. The intensity only grows as time brings us closer and closer to that most pivotal of votes, the decider of the president of the United States. I personally have never really had much faith in our system.

COMMENTARY: Offshore drilling worthy of a legitimate discussion

Iowa State Daily, Iowa State University, IA

At $4 a gallon, the high price of gas is hurting American families and putting a stranglehold on the nation's economy. This month, a survey funded by the nonpartisan Surdna Foundation found that families across the nation are paring budgets to pay for skyrocketing fuel costs, with poor families even scrimping on food and medicine.
